Trained at London's Central School of Speech and Drama. Appeared in many plays in Rep. during the early 1950's.
In 1954 went to work in Central Africa as manager on a Tea Plantation. Worked from 1955 - 1957 in the theatre in South Africa. While out there he also worked as a disc jockey and screenwriter.

Returned to the UK in 1957, first joining th Oxford Playhouse and the the Old Vic Company. Toured with The Old Vic in the early 1960's, to Russia and USA.
Was Associate Director of the Mermaid Theatre from 1962 - 1964. Directed "The Plough and the Stars".
Awards include: 1990 Nominated BAFTA TV Award Best Actor for: First and Last (1989) (TV) and 1989 Nominated BAFTA Film Award Best Actor in a Supporting Role for: White Mischief (1987)

2000 he was named a Commander of the British Empire on the New Year's Honours List for his 50 years of service to the English stage, cinema and television.

Did the Voiceover for the TV advert for Fiat Punto in 2006.
