In 1983 he enrolled in acting classes at the Glasgow Arts Centre, then trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama

In 1991 he started the Raindog Theatre Company, along with 4 other Actors. He is also a partner in the British film production company 4 Ways.
Awarded an OBE in the 1999 New Years honours list.
