Started out at the age of 16 performing Shakespeare and other classic roles in rep and touring companies throughout Britain. In 1924 he joined Sir Frank Benson's repertory company, and then the Rep in Liverpool.

Was the manager at the Westminster Theatre for 2 plays: "An Ideal Husband" and "It Depends What You Mean"
Best remembered for Richard Hannay in "The 39 Steps" and Mr Chips in "Goodbye Mr Chips"

Produced, directed and wrote "The Cure For Love" 1950
Suffered throughout his life with acute asthma and died tragically young from an asthma attack
Awards included:
1939 Nominated Oscar Best Actor in a Leading Role for: The Citadel
1940 Won Oscar Best Actor in a Leading Role for: Goodbye, Mr. Chips
BAFTA Awards 1955 Nominated BAFTA Film Award Best British Actor for: Lease of Life
Golden Globes, USA 1959 Nominated Golden Globe Best Motion Picture Actor - Drama for: The Inn of the Sixth Happiness
National Board of Review, USA 1958 Won Special Citation for: The Inn of the Sixth Happiness recieved posthumously.
